“Mo Ghile Mear” (pronounced “Muh GILL-ah mahr”) is an Irish song written to lament the departure of “Bonnie Prince Charlie”, claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland and Ireland after his defeat in the Jacobite wars of the 1700’s. The music and theme are cognate with those of the Scottish song “Will Ye no Come Back Again”.
